I am looking to install a VELUX window, I am pretty hands on & good with DIY projects. However, i have had mixed responses. Does anyone know what is best here?

Great Answer!
OK so if it's a new installation make sure you leave at least 25-30mm all the way round the frame to enable you to get the brackets in and aligned properly. This will also enable you to install an insulation collar (recommended). Make sure you know what the roof pitch is. Less than 15 degrees call your supplier as you'll need either a low pitch roof window or a special ZWC Window Profile Set which will enable you to raise the window to the required pitch i.e. 15 degrees or more - you will require to use your own 'on-site' flashing material around the sides of the window frame and to 'key in' to the surrounding tiles / slates. If you are replacing an old window - make sure you get the old window code from the top of the sash after you've opened it and cross match with the equivalent new code to ensure you get the same frame size window. Happily the frame sizes have not changed except for the old GGL5 size (now FK06) which was 70cm wide x 118cm high and is now 66cm wide x 118cm high. As the new flashings sit the window 40mm lower in the roof you will have to re-work the internal linings / plasterboard to suit. If you dont want that hassle simply use the VELUX Replacement Flashings which will keep the new window at the same height in the roof as the old window. In this case remember to use the brackets in the flashing box and not the window box. I hope that helps! Good luck
